Brooklyn 99 - S3 and S4 Reviews

S3 1 New Captain – It’s a new season and as the title suggests, the 99 has a new captain! Even if he’s only the captain for a day, Dozerman is a pretty funny, memorable character and the bit about playing backgammon always cracks me up, as does the pep talk that Gina gives to Holt about her reality show and fragrance line while he’s in a pigeon costume and all the scenes about naming the pigeon. It was so cute to see Jake and Amy talking about their kiss and I love that despite the fact that they initially decide to keep things chill and take it slow, they sleep together after their adorable first date that night, and make out in secret before finally deciding to be a real, official couple. 😊 It was so awesome that despite all that happened with Dozerman’s heart attack and any doubts they had about rushing into something, they both knew that they’d never want to be with anyone else and that they wanted to be together more than anything .<3 Boyle shipping them was the biggest mood as well. 9.5/10

2 The Funeral- Holt and Gina pay a visit to the 99 in this ep as everyone prepares for Dozerman’s funeral, where Boyle is surprisingly trying to have a casual fling with another cop. Unfortunately, the Vulture is now their captain and because he’s the worst, he tells Jake he’ll demote him unless he breaks up with Amy. ☹ Jake and Amy obviously don’t want to break up or watch Jake get demoted but watching them work together to create a plan shows how good they are for each other even in this very early stage of their relationship. Holt ends up helping them (and giving them his approval to Amy’s delight) but it was still super cute to watch Jake hyping Amy up and while the speeches were all funny as Holt’s ‘never love anything’ and Terry’s ‘mango yogurt’ speeches were iconic, Jake’s ‘six day’ speech at the wake was so cute as it was about how much he cares for Amy and wants to be with her and the fact he’s already willing to sacrifice and give it all up for her shows just how much he cares and how much she means to him. It was so touching that it even moved the stoic and typically super serious Holt. <3 9.5/10

3 Boyle’s Hunch – After not being very lucky in love, it was nice to see Boyle meet his soulmate, Genevieve, who seems so right for him and I really loved how supportive Jake was in getting them together and that he believed her but remained professional and kept working on her case to make Boyle happy. The Amy/Gina/Holt plot was more serious this time and I really liked that they mentioned such a real issue and talked about real, valid criticism of the police to show that they’d try and change and improve things. The return of Gina’s personalised merchandise is always welcome too. The Rosa/Terry plot was fun as it was nice to see a different side to Rosa and it was funny to watch Terry hold her back to stop her from throwing hands (or spoons) at Hitchcock and Scully and Rosa’s reaction when she said there were no winners was priceless. 8/10

4 The Oolong Slayer – This is a super smart, well written ep. I loved the Amy/Rosa plot and how it seemed like Amy wasn’t going to go against the Vulture’s orders even for a sexist assignment but Rosa ended up telling her that she’d go to her if she wanted to hurt someone and how it bonded them. I understand if the plot of Terry gaining weight isn’t everyone’s favourite but I appreciated that it was more about him being stressed with trying to be a dedicated husband to Sharon and father to his girls and unborn baby and that the squad showed how much they cared about him by offering to help and that it was more about him being healthy and remembering to take care of himself again rather than laughing at someone for gaining weight. Gina, Holt and Jake had some fantastic scenes in this ep too, as I loved the scene of them in the diner with Jake being a waiter and the woman being specific about her order. Gina toasting to Rihanna was iconic as well and I liked how they bonded. It also shows what a talented detective Jake is and how genuinely kind and selfless he is as he didn’t take any credit for the case despite it being a lifelong dream of his and as Holt himself said, he had his back and ensured that Holt and Gina could return without wanting anything in return. 9/10

5 Halloween III – Another Halloween, another heist. It was interesting to see Charles getting involved in Gina’s love life now that they’re exes and step-siblings and to watch how things changed for choosing teams now that Jake and Amy are together as Jake and Holt thought she’d try and be loyal to the other. We got some good Rosa and Jake moments but it was a shame not to see Jake and Amy being on the same team. Amy’s reveal was so cool and I love that she won, she so deserved it, what a queen. It was also so awesome that Holt and Jake respected and celebrated her victory and were genuinely happy for her and proud of her, it was fantastic and so brill to watch her win, even though anyone who knows anything about Jake knows that he definitely respects Amy as a smart, independent women and thinks she’s smarter than he is and would never think of her as someone’s lackey and Holt wouldn’t think of her as ‘just someone’s girlfriend’ as the reason she wasn’t picked for their teams was because they were worried about her siding with the other, not because they thought she wasn’t smart or capable on her own. 7/10

6 Into the woods – This was a really fun ep with some very moving, heartfelt scenes. I loved that it seemed like Gina was going to mock and laugh at Amy for her ‘shouldernova’/’HLS’ product but that she actually became more supportive and encouraging when Amy was down about the presentation, it was sweet. The Rosa/Holt plot was hilarious and moving as well, as their strategies for how Rosa should break up with Marcus and even acting out the scene to practise were so funny and the moment when Rosa revealed the reason she ended things and that she cared about him a lot was surprisingly emotional as watching the two characters you’d least expect to cry tearing up was powerful stuff. I liked that in the Jake/Terry/Boyle plot, both Jake and Terry learned lessons as it would have been easy to paint Jake as just irresponsible or Terry as no fun but it was cool that Jake figured out a solution and saved them (after Boyle hilariously laid into him by implying that he was only 99% right and talked about Terry eating Jake and his mother being his best friend) and that Terry said he’d not forget how to have fun. – 8.5/10

7 The Mattress -This was such a cute Jake and Amy ep! 😊 It was so sweet that Jake agreed to go mattress shopping because his current one was a bit uncomfortable and he wanted Amy to be comfortable.😊 It was so adorable when they held hands on the mattress too and that they were so excited to work together. While it wasn’t fun to watch them disagree and it was a bit of a shame for Amy to say that he doesn't make sacrifices when he was willing to get demoted to be with her (it feels especially weird knowing how many sacrifices he'd go on to make for her) and Boyle offering to buy the mattress was a big mood, we knew they’d be ok and they were better than ok, as Amy agreed to tell her mother, showing how important the relationship was to her and Jake realised (after talking with Holt about a similar situation with him and Kevin) that Amy was definitely worth buying the mattress for and it was so sweet to see how much he cares about her. It was awesome to watch Rosa doing ballet and interesting to explore how despite seeing tough love as a positive thing growing up, she realises she wants to be kind and genuinely help the kid as even if he made a mistake, coming down too hard on him might not help anyone. I loved the Holt/Gina/Boyle plot as it was nice to see Gina defending Boyle who she’s usually unkind to and I absolutely loved how Holt’s surprising love for his car tied in with the Jake/Amy plot and his relationship with Kevin, as it was so smart and so effective at cleverly demonstrating why the car meant so much to him and what it represented as it was much more than just a car to him. 9/10

8 Ava – Another Thanksgiving ep which included the arrival of a 99 baby! When Terry’s wife, Sharon, goes into labour at the precinct, it’s up to Gina and Jake to support her through it until Rosa brings Terry back. Terry’s reaction to learning about another woman going into labour and telling the perp he didn’t want to miss the birth led to some great scenes. It was so sweet that Jake was so supportive and kind and wanted to make Sharon as comfortable as possible and that even though she was repulsed by the idea of childbirth, Gina still tried to be there for her. It’s always effective and entertaining when Jake’s being super responsible and mature and Holt’s being petty and immature, it’s hysterical! Getting to meet Holt’s ex-boyfriend and learn about the dispute with the duck was fantastic too. It was funny to watch Boyle not getting to say what he was thankful for, even if it was a shame and it was cool to watch Amy in her element getting excited about all the paperwork but ultimately getting caught up in an accident with Boyle, Hitchcock and Scully. The ending was super heartwarming too, as Jake got the well-deserved honour of being the first person to meet Terry and Sharon’s new baby girl. <3 Seeing Jake’s genuinely moved, adorable reaction to meeting the baby and becoming a proud godfather was just the sweetest thing. 8.5/10

9 The Swedes – This ep focused on Jake and Rosa’s friendship, which was really cool. As the Swedish detectives seemed like the opposite to Rosa, it could easily have presented them as the antagonists but it was nice to see how it encouraged Jake and Rosa to explore their friendship and the usually very private Rosa to open up more. It was also so cool that Jake never pressured her to tell him anything personal and that he was supportive and encouraging as they’ll always be great friends to each other no matter what. It’s also super adorable that Jake wanted to get Amy something special for their six month anniversary, it was really cute and romantic. <3 We saw a very different side to Boyle this time and learned a bit about his past. It was entertaining and a bit surprising to see him get intense and competitive but the recurring joke about ‘having fun’ worked well and it was nice to see Holt and Kevin keeping in touch while Kevin’s away. The Amy/Terry/Gina plot was fun too, as we got to see more of Gina’s crush on Terry and it was awesome to watch Amy and Terry bragging and trying to teach Gina about astronomy and ‘Star Wars’ and eventually dancing together to help Gina study. There was also a cool twist that added depth to Gina’s character when she revealed she’d already passed but was inspired by their desire to help her.-8/10

10 Yippie Kayak – One of my favourite eps of the show and my fave S3 ep! It’s Christmastime and Jake recruits Gina’s help to get a last minute gift for Boyle. It really shows how much Jake’s grown and what a good person he is that he felt so guilty for not getting him something sooner even though the only reason he didn’t get it was because he wanted to make sure he had the perfect gift for Amy, which was adorable. <3 Not to mention that Jake’s smitten heart eyes for Amy in this ep’s cold open (that Andy does better than anyone) were so beautiful and lovely. <3 <3 While shopping, Jake, Gina and Boyle end up in a ‘Die Hard’ style hostage situation in the store but Jake’s more excited than anything as ‘Die Hard’ is his favourite movie of all time (as first mentioned in S1.) I loved that Jake selflessly surrendered himself to protect Boyle and let him have the John McClane moment of saving Jake and Gina (even if he didn’t quite get the quote right.) It also says a lot about how loyal, caring and considerate Jake is as a friend and person is that he didn’t resent Boyle for this or try to steal his moment. Meanwhile, Rosa, Amy and Holt are getting ready to head into the freezing water for the polar swim but Amy’s reluctant as she always feels the cold. Watching her worry that Holt and Rosa think she’s a wimp or are judging her was so relatable, even though they never actually called her a wimp. Amy getting angry at Holt is always funny too. It was so sweet then that she ran into the water as soon as she found out about the hostage situation <3 and the way she ran to Jake at the end and was so relieved that he was ok was beautiful. Terry gave us some great moments too as it was pretty satisfying when he shouted at his brother-in-law and put the Vulture in the bin as it was nice that the squad are as important to him as his blood family. Gina was pretty iconic when she got to make the flamethrowers too. 10/10

11 Hostage Situation – This is a pretty good, underrated ep and it was amazing to see Holt’s dance moves in the cold open. The Amy/Terry plot was fun as watching the strong, muscular Terry grow scared of Amy as she kept accidentally hurting him was funny but it was also nice to see that he didn’t ruin her chances at the program or resent her as he instead showed how much he values her as a detective by writing her a recommendation letter and ensuring that she got to be a mentor. Gina’s iconic quote about purple pants was one of my fave lines in the ep and it was cool to watch her talking to a perp and an interesting twist that Rosa solved it by complaining about Gina with the suspect. Holt talking about the issues with the court website was funny too. Meanwhile, Jake was trying to help Boyle and Genevieve expand their family as they’re not wasting any time and already want kids (Boyle even wants their kid to be Jake’s best friend.) However, as Charles is infertile, his ex-wife Eleanor (and like with his ex Vivian, he sometimes calls her mommy too) has some sperm samples that they want to use. It was definitely an original take on trying to have kids and I love that while Jake’s super supportive and knows that Boyle dreams of being a Dad, he won’t let him do anything unethical to achieve that dream and instead teaches him an important lesson about how he’ll be a good Dad whether or not he shares the same DNA as his kid, which is such a good message.-8.5/10

12 9 days – This was a pretty funny episode, but still had some touching moments. Firstly, the reason for the Holt/Jake/Amy plot starting was pretty sweet, as Jake tried to work on a case with Holt to make him feel less lonely while Kevin’s away. It ended up being funny when they both contracted mumps though and were quarantined together, just getting more annoyed and fed up. Even if they argued, it was nice to see them make up and it was cool to see Amy standing up to Holt and Jake getting to eat sweets again and it was great to see how much it means to Holt that Jake got him back to the 99. It was funny to see the return of Amy’s cooking but I liked that she ended up solving the case after cooking something that wasn’t a recipe. It was cool to see Gina helping Terry see what it means to be a leader and that you don’t always have to be ‘by the book’. Poor Charles was mourning the loss of his beloved dog, Jason (the humper). Even if he was a bit rude to Rosa and the incredibly adorable pup she offered to give him, it was wholesome to see how quickly Rosa became attached to said pup (Arlo) and the whole funeral scene where Rosa said she knows how it feels to love a dog so much was in equal parts moving and funny. I also wondered if Boyle’s comment about moving on from her had anything to do with his former crush… - 8/10

13 The Cruise – Doug Judy’s back! This time, he’s on a romantic cruise with Jake and Amy and still singing his song for Rosa, even though she’s not there as she’s in the middle of a ‘suck off’ with Boyle as they both want the same apartment. It was funny to hear Boyle talking about how good he is at sucking up to people as was Rosa’s offering of a mint and telling Charles not to call it a suck off. It was great to meet Holt’s sister, Debbie, who’s the exact opposite of him, which created the potential for lots of funny scenes, especially when Holt didn’t want to be called ‘fun’ and was saying things ‘I can’t..even’ but it also turned into a sweet plot as he made an effort to comfort, support and be there for Debbie when she needed it. Jake and Amy had an awesome plot this time and it was cute that Doug Judy became genuinely invested in their relationship and was shipping them as he even gave us the cutest quote ever- ‘together you’re just lovable and lovable’. He also gave Jake some relationship advice and while he got away again, it was lovely to see Jake and Amy enjoying their trip together and it was so beautiful that they were invested in each other’s interests and willing to do what the other wanted to make them happy as all Jake care about is making Amy happy. <3 When they said ‘I love you’ for the first time at the end, you could tell how much they meant it as Jake was so quick to turn his ‘noice, smort’ into a thoughtful, caring ‘I love you too’, proving that he already knows she’s the one for him and didn’t want to rush into anything or do anything that he feared would lead to it ending as he loves her with all of his heart. I hope that people don't take the fact that Amy said 'I love you' first as a sign that Jake isn't as invested in the relationship or anything as we all know that couldn't be further from the truth as he probably hadn't said 'I love you' sooner for fear of having his heart broken again as Jake falls in love so deeply, which is especially true when it comes to Amy and so didn't want to risk getting hurt. <3 9.5/10

14 Karen Peralta – We finally got to meet Jake’s mother, Karen! It’s nice that while he has such a difficult relationship with his Dad, he’s very close with his mother and it was clever how their first interaction demonstrated part of the reason why he feels this responsibility to look out for her. It was interesting to see Amy going between being nervous to meet Karen and excited to see Jake’s childhood bedroom. It made sense why Jake didn’t trust his Dad when he found out his parents were back together at his birthday dinner, given all the hurt Roger’s caused him and his mother. However, even though he didn’t initially like the idea, I like that he genuinely wanted Karen to be happy and for his Dad to treat her better as it shows that he respects her and wants to be there for her and look out for her too. The last scene when Karen said she liked Amy and Jake and Amy were both so pleased was adorable (and I liked how Amy’s lip reading skills from the heist were mentioned again.) The Terry/Rosa/Boyle plot was good, as Rosa and Terry talking about his daughters and saying that a lowercase l is just a line cracks me up. Even if Boyle ended up being very embarrassed, it was nice that he wasn’t turned into a fool or laughing stock and that he did help with the case. The escape room plot with Gina, Holt and Hitchcock and Scully was interesting, as it’s not the characters you’d expect to be put together and we got to learn more about them, such as finding out that Scully knows morse code and even if Holt didn’t want to do another escape room with them, it was clear that they did still bond, on some level. 9/10

15 The 9-8 – We got to see jealous Boyle in this ep, as Jake’s old friend and partner, Stevie, showed up to work a case. I liked that Jake made a point of saying that they couldn’t leave Charles when they accidentally drove off without him and that he wanted Boyle to be a part of their ‘beastie boys’ and believed him when he suspected Stevie had planted the drugs. The ‘would you like some milk?’ joke and reference to ‘The Lion King’ and Boyle’s old partner gave us some good scenes too, as did the part when Boyle said he wasn’t hiding his jealousy and Jake said he could have other male friends. Meanwhile, the squad’s fed up because they’re sharing with (and even end up in a big fight with) another precinct and Amy’s deskmate has a dog, causing her allergies to act up and Rosa’s deskmate is very talkative, much to her annoyance. As well as some memorable chanting from Amy and Rosa, we also got to see some of Terry’s love of yogurt in this ep too, as even after losing his computer and almost everything to the other squad, it was the yogurt that was the last straw for him and that really hurt. 7.25/10

16 House Mouses – A Hitchcock and Scully-centric ep this time with a connected ‘be careful what you wish for’ and ‘don’t meet your heroes’ message. Jake tries to give Scully and Hitchcock his drug case in hopes of getting a celebrity case but nothing goes to plan as Charles gets the celebrity case and unbeknownst to Jake, the drug bust is actually connected to a huge case and the ‘celebrity’ case is to do with Holt’s favourite oboist, who resorted to desperate measures for insurance money. Scully and Hitchcock end up getting in danger, as do Terry and Jake when they try to rescue them, but Jake figures out how to use Scully’s panic and Hitchcock’s laziness to their advantage and they get away and perhaps surprisingly you really feel that S and H deserve their brand new chairs at the end. The scenes with Jake and Charles were so good as Boyle’s stunned and almost outraged reaction when he gets the celebrity case over Jake was hilarious, as was Jake’s ‘mouses out of their houses’ speech. It would have been interesting to see Amy and Holt on the case with the oboist as neither of them are that into pop culture or celebrities. Speaking of Amy, this time she was facing her fears and inspiring women, as she, Rosa and Gina all challenged themselves to confront their phobias and support each other. Despite their resistance, Rosa and Gina did go along with it and face their fears of needles and businessmen/women respectively after watching Amy face her fear of confined spaces and they did genuinely support each other, which was good to see. Scully ordering lunch after saying he’d already eaten was a big mood as well.7.5/10

17 Adrian Pimento – This ep gave us introduced us a to new character, in the form of the titular Adrian Pimento, who’s just resurfaced after spending twelve years undercover. It was interesting to see how Jake related it back to going undercover in the mafia and I thought it was really kind of Jake to let Pimento crash at his place and ease him back into policework. Meeting Pimento was possibly quite a turning point for Jake, as since S1, he’s seemed like a character who wants to be tough and a ‘badass’ and go undercover with cool, dangerous cases and he initially thinks it’s cool that Pimento was undercover for so long but after meeting him and witnessing the trauma and emotional and physical effects and aftermath, it maybe changed his outlook. Jake had some great lines in this ep too about ‘admitting his mistakes’ but in all honesty, he’s consistently a great friend to Pimento and the squad.  Gina, Rosa and Holt were making a video for the precinct but had different ideas about how they wanted it to go, which even led to Gina getting actors to play them, as according to Holt, Gina wanted ‘pizzaz’, which is what he didn’t want. Holt’s line about wanting the sky to be tan always makes me laugh, as did the part where we learned some more about Boyle’s love of unusual food when he wanted to make a goat stew which led to Amy, Terry and Charles having sanitation issues, as Marge, the head of custodians, doesn’t like them and even reveals some dark, embarrassing secrets. However, (almost) all is forgiven when they name the break room after her, proving that they do indeed know her full name, before Boyle promptly opens some champagne and causes damage.-7.5/10

18 Cheddar - One of my fave eps from this season! Some adorable Jake and Amy and Cheddar content-what’s not to like? It was also so hilarious to see Cheddar walking around and adorably licking ice cream cones while Jake compared him to a fugitive on the run. It was so lovely that when Jake thought he’d inherited money in the cold open, his first thought was to get something for everyone in the squad and it was even sweeter when he encouraged Amy to say what she really wanted, it was so cute. <3 This wasn’t the only cute moment with them either, as Jake kindly reassuring her when Cheddar went missing and telling her that he wanted to housesit for Holt and Kevin because he’d miss her if they were separated was so adorable and shows how well he knows her as he knew that Holt’s house was her dream honeymoon destination. Boyle, who was temporarily blind after surgery, came over to help them(the line about Cheddar being the ‘alpha’ was so funny) but everything started to go wrong as Amy’s allergies started acting up, Cheddar got out and Boyle wasn’t a liar but his pants still caught on fire. On hearing this, Holt became worried and planned to cancel his trip to see Kevin and come home. The 99 then came together to figure out how to get Cheddar back before Holt’s return and it was and wasn’t surprising when Scully commented on the quality of Cheddar’s dog treats. As hinted at in the last ep, there’s something going on between Rosa and Pimento and after some intense sexual tension, it appears they’re going to act on their feelings and get together. Gina went to get Holt in Jake’s car, which she may or may not have wrecked to stall them (As if he wasn’t already the most adorable human ever, I love that Jake has so many rubber ducks as he has some on his desk, some at home and some in his car.) This led to some great moments with Gina and Holt, as she talked about finding a signature scent but it became a little more serious when Holt revealed there was something else going on that he hadn’t told anyone. This was backed up in the last scene when it was revealed that Cheddar had been acting out because he missed Kevin and that Holt had fought with Kevin and was putting off the trip because he was worried that their marriage might end if they argued again. Jake then adorably speaks from the heart about how much he looks up to Holt and how their marriage can survive anything.-9.5/10

19 Terry Kitties – Holt gained three pounds in Paris, three pounds! We also got some ‘flat top’ Terry backstory in this ep as it was revealed that before coming to the 99, he’d worked at a precinct with a bunch of jerks who never let him forget about a time he got flustered and blamed a robbery on a cat. In fact, they send him kittens to remind him of it, which he doesn’t react well to as he repeatedly screams at the sweet little kittens. Jake, who being the best guy ever is obviously a swiftie as revealed in this ep, agrees to help him solve the case and is really cute with the kittens as he blows them kisses to make them feel better when Terry yells at them and gives them ‘Die Hard’ names. It was so awesome that Jake literally stayed up all night to help solve the case and wasn’t getting anything in return, he just wanted to help a friend, which shows how incredibly kind he is. Amy, Rosa and Holt were at their most competitive in this ep as Amy and Rosa trash talk at a bomb diffusing class (well, Amy arguably gets her feelings hurt a little more than Rosa does) and Holt sneakily turns out to be just as competitive as they are as shown in the scene when they decide to go to a driving contest after learning that Hitchcock and Scully did better on the bomb class than they did and they even didn’t know they’d been diffusing bombs. Meanwhile, Gina tries to defend Boyle when she thinks Pimento’s taking advantage of him but the twist of whether or not Boyle gave her the idea to protect him without her realising was pretty clever. Not to mention that Boyle calling himself ‘Virginia Woolf’ and saying he didn’t want to name himself after her ‘lame husband Leonard’ was pretty awesome. 8.5/10

20 Paranoia – Rosa and Pimento are definitely not taking things slow as they’re already engaged! As  Pimento’s best man, Jake brings all the guys except for Charles together for his bachelor party. It was so nice that Jake wanted Terry to get on board and be more supportive of the engagement, as it shows how much he cares about Rosa and wants her to be happy. Meanwhile, Rosa and her co maid of honours, Amy, Boyle and Gina, are having a bachelorette party. I loved that they didn’t make a big deal out of Boyle being a maid of honour or laugh at him for it, it was so awesome and Amy and Boyle freaking out about planning the party led to some great moments. Gina, Amy and Boyle all organize different activities to do as Gina chooses laser tag, Boyle picks demolishing a restaurant and Amy chooses a quiz about Rosa but everyone ends up getting super drunk and not being able to answer any questions about her. Even if it started off as a competition, it was so nice to see how they all bonded and enjoyed doing each of the activities and were happy for Rosa and Pimento. However, at the bachelor party, things take a turn when it’s revealed that the criminal, Jimmy Figgis, is trying to kill Pimento, but his groomsmen try to keep him safe and even end up recruiting Boyle’s help to get an animal tongue to pretend to be Pimento’s tongue (makes sense in context). Rosa and Pimento have an emotional goodbye, as he has to pretend to be dead and it was so nice that Jake made sure that Rosa was ok. 8.5/10

21 Maximum Security- This ep was about Amy proving what a badass she is, which was so awesome as well as being relatable when Amy was concerned that people didn’t see her that way, as Rosa was chosen to go undercover as a tough, violent pregnant woman in the prison and as a notary, Amy was worried about stamping the fake death certificate and raising her hand to speak. However, when it turned out that Rosa couldn’t go undercover as she’d arrested someone in the prison, Amy had to go undercover instead(which makes a lot of sense as Melissa, who portrays Amy, was pregnant in real life.) Jake and Boyle are her doctors (like Property bros but for gynaecology) and there are plenty of great moments with the three of them such as Boyle wanting them to have a baby for real and referencing ‘High School Musical’ and Amy using slang. Jake kept calling Amy in to keep her safe, which was mainly played for laughs, as she grew increasingly annoyed when he pulled her out of some pretty safe situations. However, the tone shifted when he revealed that he was genuinely worried and couldn’t watch her be in danger but NOT because he doesn't have faith in her but because he loves and cares for her so much. It was such a sweet scene, especially when Amy said she understood and that she worried about him. It was also so awesome that Jake made a point of saying that he wasn’t tough enough to think about her being in danger and took himself off the case, rather than saying that she needed protection as it shows how healthy their relationship is and how much he respects her as he’s never even heard of ‘toxic masculinity’. The Rosa/Terry/Gina plot was also funny and moving as the Adele reference and Gina’s high fives at Pimento’s fake funeral were iconic and I liked that despite not wanting to show emotion in her speech, Rosa conveyed how much Adrian meant to her and genuine concern for him while still being herself. The bit about the mailers for Amy’s puzzling camp seemed VERY ooc for Jake but I’m sure it was either accidental or he planned for them to take a trip somewhere she’d love that summer or something as if she’d wanted to go to the camp, he would obviously have been super sweet and supportive about it. 9/10

22-The Bureau – A lot happened in this ep. For instance, we learned that Boyle and Genevieve are adopting because their fertility treatments didn’t work out, yay for ‘B99’ showing that there’s more than one kind of family and that having kids doesn’t come easily to everyone. <3 It was nice to see Amy being so happy for him but then pretending not to be to keep their cover and Boyle pretending to describe her vagina. Jake’s attempts to do a pull-up were hilarious and a nice call back to him struggling to keep up with Terry at the gym in s1 and s2. It was also so cute that he was excited to tell Amy about the pull-up on the phone at the end. Rosa doing yoga was so cool to see and Gina was iconic in this ep as well as she taught Holt about ‘Sex and the city’ and proved that she knew what Terry was going to say when he was worried about the crime stats being leaked by literally getting a cake with what he said on it. There turned out to be another big twist at the end when Bob, who’d worked with Holt, turned out to be working with Figgis. 8.75/10

23-Greg and Larry – Wow, what an amazing finale! Boyle and Amy are leaving Texas and heading back to help the squad. I loved Holt talking about giving Kevin his regards in a literal sense and the callback to s2 with Amy’s ‘teacher’s pet’ line and how she used the fake (or in Mel’s case, real) baby bump to get them first class tickets. They had some amazing scenes on the plane too, as Boyle’s reaction to Amy not paying attention when they watched ’27 dresses’ was gold. It was both funny and touching when they had sundaes and Amy talked about how she’d missed Jake and wanted to tell him that she loves him so much and Boyle wanted his future child to meet Jake more than anything else. Holt and Bob talking about rice was super funny too and the rest of the squad had some great moments as well, as Rosa showed a different side to herself with the summer’s kiss candle and their different methods for trying to get Bob to talk were all great too, including Holt and Jake referencing the ‘funky cold medina’. It was awesome to see the 99 all back together and chanting 99 at Shaw’s, even if Hitchcock and Scully were still confused (Hitchcock’s driving was really something else too.) It was especially adorable to see Jake and Amy talking about living together and saying how much they love each other after her earlier conversation with Boyle. However, despite the cute scene, there was another twist as Holt and Jake ended up in witness protection in Florida because of the connection to Figgis. – 10/10

S4 1-Coral Palms part 1-It’s a new season but Holt and Jake are the only main characters in this ep as they’re in witness protection in Florida, going by Larry(Jake) and Greg(Holt).Watching Holt power walking and pretend to be straight led to some great moments, as did the burrito scene and all the Fun Zone scenes as Jake got a promotion and asked Holt to do the birthday dance and dress up as a hotdog, which was pretty hilarious. It’s not all fun and games, though, as Holt and Jake are both deeply unhappy there and want to return to NY, as Jake is adorably missing Amy loads. Watching him kiss the photo of her was just the cutest thing. Jake was on fire in this ep in general, as he called out the transphobia in ‘Ace Ventura’ and swapped the phones to get the video even when Holt was angry with him. It was nice to see how they’ll get through it together though and how working the case might actually help them make it through, as they both miss their significant others. 7.75/10

2-Coral Palms part 2 – Holt and Jake are still in Florida but this time it cuts between Florida and the rest of the squad back in Brooklyn, who have a new bongo-playing captain called CJ, who isn’t the most competent but when he starts giving the squad everything they want, including a wall for Rosa, a yogurt fridge for Terry and a treadmill desk for Boyle, the whole squad apart from Amy seems to like him. Gina even gets an assistant named Emily who delivers some creatively mean insults to Amy. Meanwhile, Holt and Jake end up sharing a kiss to get out of jail in Florida as the sheriff was homophobic. We also got a touching moment when Holt talked about feeling embarrassed and not wanting to be rescued by the squad, only for Jake to kindly remind him that the squad will always be there for each other and would do anything for each other. The scenes with Jake talking about Taylor Swift were great and we saw a different side to CJ when he refused to let the squad go to Florida. It was also sweet when Amy talked about writing to Jake and how everyone wanted to add something. 7.5/10

3 Coral Palms part 3- It was so good to see everyone reunited in this ep and watching Jake and Amy be so happy to finally be reunited was beautiful and no one was more excited than Boyle, who kept hilariously demanding that they kiss. It was sad to see that even though Jake had missed her so much and couldn’t wait to see her, he was right about there being some initial awkwardness between them. However, it was all still adorable as they shared a very cute forehead kiss and it made it so special when they kissed and were back in sync by the end.The way Jake looked at Amy when they kiss, even though she’d literally just shot him(to save his life and so Figgis would let him go) proves how in love they are and that nothing could break them up. Boyle and Terry were funny in this ep too, with Terry singing a song for his daughters and Boyle commenting on his parenting decisions now that he has a son of his own. The car scenes were good too and the scene when Holt was more chill about doing surgery on himself than Jake was about looking at it was brilliant(Holt trying to stand up while injured was a bit reminiscent of Jake in AC/DC too, I thought). Boyle and Gina had some great moments with Jake too and Gina seems to be taking more of an interest in herself as a personal brand by saying that ‘Gina Linetti is a state of mind’. 8.5/10

4 The night shift- It’s great to see everyone back together 😊 but it’s a shame that nobody is in a good mood as they’re all down about being put on the night shift as a punishment for going to Florida. Jake’s back too and he’s got a cane but lost his ‘frosted tips’ (the cold open with Boyle getting tips was so brill.) Jake and Boyle work a case together but Boyle can’t stay working on it for too long now that he has Nikolaj, his adopted son. I love that even though Jake was sad about working the case alone(well, not entirely alone as he met New Girl’s Jess Day) he was genuinely happy for Boyle and genuinely cares about him as he got a super thoughtful gift for Nikolaj and played with him, which was so cute(Boyle was a whole mood in that scene.) Terry was funny when he was what Sharon calls, ‘night sassy’ and I liked that Gina’s got an online following in Australia and Holt’s party complete with classical music, ‘party convo’ and signs was too hilarious, as was the forced smiling/laughing scene, it cracks me up every time. Rosa and Amy had some good scenes too, as even Amy thought the paperwork was less fun at night and even though she was initially angry that Rosa lied to her about where she was, it led to some nice moments between the two of them, as Rosa revealed that she was waiting for Pimento and wanted to see him again and even cried a bit. <3 It was funny and sweet when Ames tried to comfort her but I really liked it when Amy said that Rosa was there for her when Jake was in Florida, proving how much they care about each other and it was so nice when she said that she’d keep Rosa company while she waited for Adrian. 8.5/10

5 Halloween IV – It’s time for another heist! I really liked how the different ways that Jake, Amy and Holt introduced the heist said a lot about their personalities and attitudes towards the heist and it was awesome when Jake said that Amy should be the first to pick for her team and when she picked Rosa. Amy and Rosa had some amazing scenes in this ep as they bonded over ‘The baby-sitters’ club’, as it was nice that Rosa genuinely liked Amy’s plan and didn’t mock or humour her, which made Amy so happy. There were some good moments with Holt and Boyle too, as it was hilarious when Holt talked about Cheddar making him proud and it was so nice that Jake offered to take Gina to the dentist after her skating accident, proving how decent he is. We also met a new character in the form of Bill, who may or not be a male prostitute. In true heist fashion, we got a clever twist as it’s revealed that Gina subtly convinced Holt and Boyle to pair up and ended up winning the whole heist by faking the accident even after everyone suspected Terry. Gina’s speech was a great moment as while it was cool to see her be victorious and say how much everyone means to her, it also gave some insight into her character by revealing some deep-rooted insecurities about being the only civilian/non-officer in the precinct. 9.5/10

6 Monster in the closet- Such an underrated ep and one of my faves from s4. Pimento’s back and he and Rosa are (possibly) ready to get married (and to get physical in the briefing room.) Much to Amy’s delight, Rosa asks her to plan the wedding and it’s so cool to watch how strong their friendship is and to see them uplift each other and it was cute when Jake smiled at her, proving how well he knows her and that he loves her organized side. We also got to learn more about Rosa and Pimento, which suggests that their relationship is not what you might expect, as they both like Nancy Meyers films. Gina, Jake and Pimento had some good scenes when they tried to get some lost earrings and Pimento became convinced that there were signs that they should cancel the wedding. I also love how progressive the show by having characters call Jake ‘girl’ and ‘sister’ and Jake wanting Rosa and Pimento to think he knows about romcoms, which was so awesome as a lot of other shows would have taken an opportunity to make a sexist joke that laughs at men for liking romcoms or tries to call them ‘girls’ in a misogynistic, derogatory way but offensive jokes and stereotypes are the last things you’ll see at the 99. Meanwhile, Hitchcock and Scully are actually thriving and loving their jobs of choosing the chairs, a job they take very seriously. Holt was so hilarious with the balloon arch and every word he said in this ep was hysterical, including his proud ‘vindication’ at the end when Rosa was the only other person who liked the arch as much as he did. Rosa, Holt, Terry and Boyle all ended up getting drunk and laughing and crying together, which led to some great scenes. After sobering up and getting everything ready (Rosa made such a beautiful bride btw), Rosa and Adrian decide to stay together but not get married.  9.75/10

7 Mr Santiago – It’s turkey day again and as the title suggests, we’re going to meet a member of Amy’s family, specifically her Dad, Victor. Jake’s nervous to meet him and tried to change himself by channelling Amy and making a binder about him (a bit like Amy’s binder for meeting Karen, Jake’s mother). Jake and Victor seem to get on well at first and even team up for a case but Victor finds out about the binder and insults Jake, telling him that he’s not good enough for Amy (as well as getting in a funny Taylor Swift reference.) Amy then tells her Dad that it’s up to her who she wants to be with and while I like that she says it and I really love the message as I always love feminist messages, it seems surprising to criticise Jake for this as Amy wanted Holt’s approval when they first got together and Jake’s never tried to make Amy’s choices for her and didn’t say that they couldn’t date any more if her Dad didn’t like him or anything and we know he’s a true ally and way more progressive than basically all other white sitcom men, as many are genuinely sexist, which Jake never is, as he made a point of ensuring that Amy got to speak at the start despite wanting to hear Holt's take on ‘Lemonade’ (an iconic moment) and never mocked or judged her for being uptight. Practically every other white sitcom man besides Jake needs to learn about feminism and respecting and valuing women as many other sitcom men get away with so much gross sexism without facing any consequences. In fact, Jonah in ‘Superstore’, who’s an ally like Jake, had a similar thing with Kristen and Glenn when he wanted to get Glenn’s approval when he dated Kristen in S2 and was never called out or criticised for anything. Amy’s speech inadvertently inspires Jake and Victor to solve the case and Jake and Amy share a cute moment when she says she loves him and Victor is cool with them dating if Amy’s happy. Meanwhile, Boyle was planning to kill a turkey for dinner but everyone ends up chasing it instead. It was cool to see Holt and Pimento bond in this ep too, with Pimento wanting to become a PI and watching the dog show together and it referred back to Holt’s former gambling addiction. Gina’s line about consequences is always great as well, as was Amy’s line about how turkeys can’t fly and the cold open with Holt’s first ‘marshed mallow’. 7.5/10

8. Skyfire Circle – Such an iconic ep with a super funny and sweet cold open. The incredible ‘bone’ scene happens in this ep and it never disappoints. The combination of Amy’s increasing discomfort, Rosa casually checking her nails and the juxtaposition of Holt yelling for 40 mins and articulately expressing himself is pure gold and always iconic. All the scenes with Rosa, Amy, Holt and Kevin in this ep are great though as I love how Amy gets excited about maths and genuinely tries to solve the math problem but Rosa's the one who works out the reason for their fight. Meanwhile, Jake and Terry ‘geek out’ by dressing in sci-fi costumes when working on a case with Terry’s favourite author, Parlov, who turns out to be a jerk who didn’t even write the inscription that inspired Terry as a boy. However, Jake cheers him up delivering a super kind, wholesome speech about how much Terry inspires him and how much he looks up to him, which was so heartfelt and sincere. Gina had some great moments with Charles and the Boyles too, as she seems to be disgusted by them but the clever twist of what they were deciding on and how she became like them with saying ‘I love you’ and learning about them was pretty cool.-9/10

9 The Overmining - This ep gave us arguably one of the funniest cold opens with a ‘wiest infection’ and the return of CJ and his ‘that’s going to leave a mark’ and ‘come on and party tonight’ catchphrases. This time, he ends up getting involved in a case with Jake and Holt. Jake’s not that keen on CJ and tries to help him get a promotion to get him transferred. It was pretty funny that CJ ended helping take down the perp by just opening the door and I liked the twist that Holt actually called the reporters to try and transfer CJ by ‘overmining’ him. It was so nice to see the father-son dynamic between Jake and Holt too.Gina had some great lines in this ep too, when she was talking about her beloved space heater ‘Jacinta’ and her kindergarten teacher. It was a nice twist that she was actually trying to help Terry feel better after failing his exam even if it seemed like she was competing with him and Amy had some iconic moments too, such as telling Terry to ‘diaper up’ for tests and laminating in secret. Meanwhile, Rosa and Boyle bonded over foot massages and made the hard decision to bust the place for money laundering despite loving the massages more than anything. 8.75/10

10 Captain Latvia – It’s the most wonderful time of the year at the 99 <3 and they’re back on the day shift with Holt as the captain (not sure if CJ was the captain in the last ep or if Holt was always the captain). The Christmas tree cold open is a classic and Boyle’s line about how the ‘tree was inside them all along’ is one of my fave ever Boyle lines. Speaking of Boyle, he’s trying to get a Latvian action figure for his son, Niko, with Jake’s help. It was sweet to see what dedicated, loving parents Genevieve and Charles are to their boy (without losing their inapprops, sexual side) and it was cool to see Boyle being a cool badass taking down the mob and dancing and breaking the mugs when Jake hurt his hand as we don't often see a cool or tough side to Boyle, so it was pretty entertaining and interesting. He never loses what makes him Boyle, though, by telling Jake to have kids and saying he wanted to ‘perk up his little man’(cheer up his son) without realising how it sounds. Jake was funny but also taught Charles an important lesson about how presents aren’t the most important part of Christmas and how being there with Nikolaj is the best gift he can give him. I love how Jake goes from joking around to being impressed by Boyle and giving him such important, meaningful advice when it comes to parenting and his family. It was also so nice that Jake kept trying to get the action figure and even though he was unable to get it, it ends up being a more heartwarming scene than I ever could have imagined(this show just has so much heart) as he gives Niko a police action figure to remind him of Boyle(and the 99) and doesn’t even take credit for it, which is so incredibly kind and wholesome and melts my heart so much, Jake’s just the sweetest and the absolute best. Meanwhile, the squad are competing in a carolling contest against their rivals, the MTA and recruit a drunk perp with a great voice to sing with them. There were some great scenes while they were performing and rehearsing such as Amy being told she couldn’t ‘mouth percuss’, Hitchcock rapping and Gina claiming she discovered ‘Hamilton’. It was a funny plot but it was so heartwarming when they all joined Scully when he started carolling. 8.75/10

11 The Fugitive part 1 – This is such a brilliant ep! It’s exciting to learn that Jake and Amy are talking about moving in together again and when they can’t decide where to live, it’s fun to see the competitive side of their relationship from season one returning especially as they’re open about being so in love and committed to each other now.Rosa and Holt had some funny moments with Holt acting out tying a tie to represent a child and the ‘cookie pizza’(as described by H and S.)Boyle was pretty funny, if a little much, when talking about Amy ovulating and seeing Jake more if he lived with Amy and I liked that when Terry talked about wanting his own space for painting he wasn’t mocked for it and didn’t talk about ‘mancaves’ or stereotypically ‘masculine’ interests.I loved it so much when Jake revealed that he’d started reading ‘Harry Potter’ just because Amy loves it and he wanted to make her happy <3 <3 It’s lovely see Ames being so excited that she gets to share her favourite books with the person she loves who loves her enough to take an interest in what she cares about. <3 Another incredibly beautiful moment came when Jake stopped to let Amy win and agreed to move in with her to make her happy as it’s so heartwarming and sweet when he compliments her and gives up his single towel (and his apartment) for her as her happiness is the most important thing to him. <3 <3  10/10

12 The Fugitive part 2 – After the reveal that the last convict in the previous ep wasn’t guilty, Jake ends up teaming up with his old pal and frenemy, Doug Judy. There are a lot of iconic moments between them this time, such as their ‘flydog’ song and it’s funny to watch Holt reacting to their songs and overall dynamic, as well as seeing his love for his beloved car Gertie again. I really liked it when Jake said the line about how ‘men are terrible’, as while it couldn’t be further from the truth with him, it’s unfortunately true of so many men. Jake definitely seems to like Doug Judy more by this point and is starting to think of him as a friend. Rosa and Terry had some funny moments too, with Terry talking about getting older and Vin Diesel with his bald head and I loved getting to see Rosa relive her ‘dark past’ of doing gymnastics. The Amy/Boyle/Gina plot was funny too, as I love the idea of a ‘GoT’ group chat with Gina and H and S. I could kinda relate to Boyle and the idea of being an ‘overtexter’ and it cracks me up when he says ‘I literally have zero pride’. All their scenes were so funny. 8.75/10

13 The Audit -Another stellar ep! After the shocking ending of the last ep where Gina was hit by a bus (and in her words, ‘the brightest star in the cosmos was extinguished’), she’s back and dancing! It turns out that the 99 could potentially be shut down and it’s Amy’s boring ex, Teddy, who’s come to decide whether they’ll get to remain open or not. This led to some super adorable moments(such as Jake taking Amy’s hand) and some awkward moments with Amy, Jake and Teddy, as Teddy gets some funny lines but he totally sucks and is NOT a good boyfriend, as he basically forgets about his new girlfriend, Rachel, and proposes to Amy in front of Jake, Amy and Rachel because he’s just the worst. It’s easy to understand why Jake and Amy or ‘detectives S and P’ called him boring. It gave us some super cute moments though, such as Amy getting into ‘Die Hard’ for Jake and saying that she loves that she and Jake are so different (although Teddy was so wrong when he said they had nothing in common). The jazz brunch scenes were pretty funny too, as were the scenes with Holt and Terry and the copier, as Holt’s line about how crime had continued was iconic. Boyle was on good form too, as he had some great lines such as ‘there’s nothing gendered about a sexy cat’, ‘tell Jake I never panicked’ and calling Jake +Amy ‘America’s dream couple’. It was nice to see how much Rosa cares about him, though, as she seemed the most concerned when he was hurt. 9/10

14 Serve and Protect – Not a personal fave but it’s still v.good. This time, it’s Terry’s ex, Veronica, who’s coming to decide if the 99 will remain open or not. All the scenes with Amy and Gina trying to get Terry to tell them why Veronica’s upset with him were pretty funny and I liked Amy’s ‘girl talk’ and when Gina brought Terry’s love for yogurt into it. The Holt/Boyle plot was so funny too with putting pauses in their speech for emphasis and Boyle’s lines about ‘desperate times call for desperate housewives’ and generally inappropriate language and it’s always awesome when he talks about his love for Jake. Meanwhile, it was cool to see Rosa and Jake being the experts on a cop TV show when speaking to the cast and crew, especially because of Jake’s love of TV and movies. It was also so sweet when Jake tried to make Rosa feel better when she was down by reassuring her that they’d always be friends, it was so wholesome. 7.75/10

15 The Last ride-  Such a good ep! Everyone’s worried that it’s the last day of them all working together as the precinct might get closed. Gina’s cement pranks and ‘G-hive’ were pretty iconic and it was nice that even though Terry was discouraged and shocked about Hitchcock getting the most arrests, Rosa encouraged him by reminding him how much he’s helped everyone on cases. It was so great to see Amy’s reaction to Holt’s mentorship binder after she’d been wanting him to mentor her since day one and all the scenes with him mentoring her for a whole day while she rapidly took notes were brilliant. Jake and Boyle had some really cool and very touching scenes, as it was funny to watch them swapping roles at some points and to watch Jake racing on the bike and asking for hot cocoa because of his bruise but it also led to some super sweet moments when they were both crying and Jake told Boyle that every case was with him was the best case ever. <3 It also shows how incredibly decent and caring Jake is as he was considerate of the suspect and encouraged Boyle that they should make the right, selfless decision for the city, which inspired Gina’s followers to save the precinct and made Holt proud(it also made Amy happy.) 9/10

16 Moo Moo -A much more serious ep this time but it still expertly delivered the laughs as well as an important message. Jake and Amy were babysitting Terry’s twins, Cagney and Lacey in this ep and it was so cute to see them squeeing over how adorable kids are, it was the sweetest and it was funny that Boyle was so extra and over the moon about it! The first time they babysit, Cagney loses her blanket, which leads to some great moments when Jake thinks that Terry’s talking about having another kid that they didn’t pick up and when Terry says he loves Jake after Jake says it first. However, the tone changes drastically when Terry’s racially profiled by a racist cop in his own neighbourhood. The 99 backs Terry up 100% and Jake and Amy babysit the girls again but are unsure how to talk to them about such a serious and sad subject and while Jake jokes a bit, they eventually decide to talk to the twins about it and they do it with the perfect balance of kindness, thoughtfulness and support and in a way that children would understand without talking down to them and it’s an incredible moment, proving what a great team they make in every sense and that they’d be the BEST parents. <3 I also love that Jake was immediately supportive and so progressive as he said they didn’t have to be girls when the twins said they didn’t want be to girls/women. It was also nice to see that Holt did support and help Terry and even if they joke a bit, the respect that they (and all the characters) have for each other is so wonderful to see. Gina and Rosa had some great lines about the twins riding the subway and getting ubers too. 9/10

17 Cop Con – One of my fave S4 eps! This time, the squad are heading to a conference and are excited to party (except for Holt who’s working on a big presentation for the conference.) The rest of the squad decide to plan a big party and get drunk. It was so cute to see Amy smiling at Jake when he talked about the party and that he held her hair back when she threw up. Boyle getting jealous of Jake’s new robot partner was so funny and all the scenes with Terry, Jake and Charles trying to find Holt’s laptop for his presentation were great and the scenes with a very tired, hungover Rosa on the treadmill with Holt were amazing(there were some brill lines too as Holt calling Jeffrey a dumbass was particularly funny.) Scully met his soulmate in this ep as he fell for Cindy, who’s just like him. It was nice to see Gina and Amy trying to help him talk to her before realising that she liked him for him, it was sweet. The pictures from the party were all pretty funny too, with Boyle doing the splits and Rosa making tequila steam but unfortunately, Holt turned out to be right about Jeffrey, his rival, as he sabotaged Holt’s presentation. It was so sweet that Jake read ALL the bylaws for Holt to help him get on the board, which demonstrates how much he cares about him and to make it even more heartwarming, he made sure that Holt got to go to the thermometer museum that he’d mentioned and that everyone got to be in a picture together. It was so wholesome to see the lengths that Jake and the 99 would go to to make Holt happy. 10/10

18 Chasing Amy- My fave ep of the season! I love it so much. Terry and Holt had some good scenes, bonding over model trains as while it was a shame to see Terry’s toy restaurant get thrown away, it was funny to see Kevin’s lack of interest which only brought Holt and Terry closer as they played with the trains together. It was sweet to see how much Gina cares about Boyle with the ‘mother dough’ when meeting his relatives. Amy’s super stressed about her sergeant’s exam(so proud of her for rising up the ranks) and is stress braiding her hair, singing and attacking microwaves. Jake, being the world’s best boyfriend, is super encouraging and even sets up a practice test for her. However, she goes missing right before her exam (and not to get more potato chips for Scully, much to his disappointment). Rosa and Jake prove how well they know her by trying to trace her steps to find her and even meet Amy’s friend Kylie on the way. It was so beautiful that Amy went back to where they had their bet date in season one, as it proves how special and important that night was for them. <3 The whole scene with them on the roof was so beautiful and demonstrated how healthy and pure their relationship is, as Amy revealed that she’d aced the practice test (like Jake knew she would) and wasn’t worried about whether or not she’d pass but was actually worried that she’d pass and it would change their relationship. It was so awesome that instead of feeling threatened by the prospect of her outranking and out earning him, like SO many other sitcom men would, Jake championed her as he always does and told her to go for her dreams and not hold herself back as she’s too good not to go for the success that she deserves. It was an incredible scene and I love that Jake wanted to ‘Die Hard’ off the roof as it made so much sense for his character and it’s cute that Rosa and Amy know he was going to do it and that he was doing it for Amy. <3 The quiz scene at the end with even Kylie liking them as a couple was good too, as it was so cute that Amy wanted to make Jake happy and it was a nice call-back to the earlier ‘Transformers’ reference, even if it was a shame if Jake felt embarrassed at the quiz again :(. 10/10

19 Your Honor- We got to meet Holt’s Supreme court judge mother, Laverne, in this ep! Amy was so funny when she was talking about her and her nervous ‘jamming’ speech. It was nice to see how Jake quickly thought of Laverne as a friend and wanted to be good friends but respected her a lot and I love that he was so excited to see photos from Holt’s childhood and the charts he’d drawn as a kid. It was also really cool that he helped Holt with his relationship with Laverne and the ‘kowabunga mother’ scene is never not iconic(the cold open with Jake being stuck in the interrogation room is iconic too.) It was sweet to watch Laverne and Holt discuss getting closer when she talked about her dating life and Jake’s reaction to their conversation was adorable. The plot with Boyle, Rosa, Terry and H & S was good too, as I loved Rosa’s reference to ‘The Holiday’ and her love of the kitchens in the film and it was fun to watch them posing together, only to discover that they liked the breakroom the way it was. Amy and Gina’s plot was pretty cool and empowering too, as Amy offered to teach Gina how to change a tyre and while Gina seemed to be taking advantage of Amy by getting her to change a tyre without paying attention, she had some interesting points about how not everyone necessarily needs to know how to change a tyre and I liked that when Amy was worried about slashing a stranger’s tyre, Gina helped her out by proving that she did know how to change one and her line about ‘schooling’ her was an interesting one for the Amy-Gina relationship, as Amy is the more academically inclined one of the two of them. There was something quite inspiring about seeing Amy’s joy that Gina had learned how to do it though, even when her own tyres had been removed. 8.5/10

20.The Slaughterhouse – In this ep, Amy was very upset about her favourite pen and ‘best friend’ going missing but when it turns out that it was Holt who’d lost it, she just couldn’t get angry with him. It was funny to watch her try and hear her growl and say it ‘grates her cheese’, especially with the parallels with not being able to get aroused, it was just a great scene all around and watching her shout at Holt for real (and not just about the pen) was quite satisfying but also funny and sweet as she was adorably excited and liberated but also slightly apologetic, which felt right for her character. Meanwhile, Gina, Boyle and Terry were trying to deal with Hitchcock and Scully’s fight and it was pretty funny to hear about the meatball fight and puppy puzzle but it was interesting to see Gina be one step ahead again as she figured out how to stop their fight. Rosa and Jake were competing for a place on a prestigious task force with Melanie Hawkins, who they both look up to. It was interesting to see them be competitive with each other and to get another Nancy Meyers reference, as well as Jake driving with a frisbee wheel and saying ‘my brain needs it’s fast juice’ after Rosa dosed his water with caffeine(I also love that he’s drinking water for Amy and has been trying to take care of himself more since dating her, even if he thinks grease is the same as water.)It was so cool that they nominated each other for the task force and just wanted the other to be happy, I love that they supported and championed the other. It was also so awesome to watch them hug and I loved it when Jake said he was happy that Rosa got to work for a badass woman like her, I love feminist Jake sm. 8.75/10

21.The Bank Job – After the twist at the end of the last ep that Melanie Hawkins is dirty, Rosa and Jake recruited Holt’s help to take down her team of bank robbers from the inside. The scene when all three of them are at Holt’s exercise class was so brilliant too. Meanwhile, Gina’s got a secret and after seeing a document on her computer, the squad determine that she’s pregnant(wonder if that was alluded to in the previous ep when she talked about being a dad someday…) Amy’s awkward speech about ‘kokomo’ to try and hide the fact that they know about her pregnancy was pretty funny and it was fun to watch Amy, Terry and Boyle try to work out who the father is after Gina told them it was a celebrity. However, it ended up not being who they expected as it turns out that the father of her baby is Milton, one of Boyle’s cousins. However, he’s more conventionally handsome and seemingly ‘cooler’ than people expect a Boyle to be, to Charles Boyle’s disgust, as he thought Milton was the ‘least cool’ and his reaction to him was so funny, even calling him a troll. Gina and Milton seem like they’d make a good couple though and I liked their dance and line about ‘selling snow’. Pimento was back in this ep and he was beaten up to keep Jake and Rosa’s cover and even accidentally snorted cocaine when trying to demonstrate how to pretend to take it. Unfortuantely, this ep had a sombre ending as there was a mix up the day after Jake and Rosa went out drinking with Melanie and the 99 ended up at the wrong bank, meaning that Rosa and Jake were sadly framed and arrested for a crime they didn’t commit. 8.5/10

22. Crime and Punishment – This was arguably one of the saddest eps and certainly the saddest season finale, as the squad are attending the trial for Jake and Rosa and trying to prove their innocence. There were some funny moments, such as Boyle’s hair going grey with the stress and Jake’s reactions in court (I love the joke of him not knowing how movies/stories end) and nobody being surprised by Rosa having a razor blade under her tongue and Boyle, Terry and the hackers uncovering some footage of Terry dancing. There were many serious and moving moments too, though, such as the moment when Holt reminded Rosa that the 99 are her family and when she said she wasn’t ready to say goodbye after considering going undercover and running away to Argentina to be with Pimento (and Gina’s cute reaction.)Jake and Amy had some very romantic scenes too, though, as they talked about going to Paris and she said she’d wait for him and keep fighting for him, no matter what, proving their lovely devotion and commitment to each other. Sadly, what they thought was their last hope ended up working against them and Rosa and Jake are wrongfully imprisoned. ☹ (The combination of Jake’s final, downbeat ‘cool, cool, cool’ and Gina instantly comforting Amy was pretty heartbreaking.) 9/10
